Many gathered Sunday for a benefit concert at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church in Toledo. Both Reverend Randall Blakely and his donor Derek Reece were in attendance with family, friends, and strange – good Samaritans who want to be a part of to what some are calling a miraculous story. Rev. Blakely is a 45-year-old pastor of Disciples of Christ Church of God in Christ in South Toledo. Both his father and sister passed away from kidney disease in 2007. After five years of dialysis and waiting for a kidney donor, his prayers were finally answered when Reece, a 44-year-old Toledo barber, heard the visiting pastor’s testimony this past Easter. Reece says the surgery that is set up for this Friday will be his first ever. A benefit concert was held Sunday night to raise money that the two men will need after the surgery and to encourage others to become organ donors.
